Iron River was originally was an iron ore mining town sending its ore to Chicago and Indiana where it was processed by the local steel mills.
Now however it is best known for its recreational activities.
Fishing, golfing, hiking, hunting, skiing and snowmobiling are all here.

Golfing is available at either George Young’s Championship 18-hole Golf Course or the Iron River Country Club.
If hiking is what you prefer then you have your choice of Bewabic State Park; Glidden Lake Foot Paths; Lake OttawaGe-Che Trail; Brule Lake; Pentoga Park; The Indian Ceremonial Bowl Trail; or the Wolf Track Nature Trail.
Hunting for white tail deer, ruffed grouse, woodcock or bear is available throughout the area.
Iron River offers alpine skiing, nordic skiing, or snowboarding, are offered at the Spring Valley Ski Hill and Ski Brule.
With over 200 miles of trails snowmobilers have lots of options for their sledding enjoyment.
