Welcome to the City of Ladysmith. Located along the scenic Flambeau River, Ladysmith features a diverse business district and a strong industrial base. Ladysmith is the county seat of Rusk County
The city was founded at the intersection of the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad (Soo Line) with the Flambeau River in 1885 to take advantage of the logging and lumbering industry. Originally named “Flambeau Falls” after the Ojibwa name for the area Gakaabikijiwanan (“of cliffed rapids”) the city went through two more name changes until 1900. The town was finally named “Ladysmith”, after the wife of Charles R. Smith, head of the Menasha Wooden Ware Co.
Today, the city has a population of 3,154 residents who call it home. Residents of the area enjoy many different recreational activities including kayaking, skiing, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, and more. The Flambeau River and Dairyland Reservoir are excellent fishing and boating spots. The Dairyland Reservoir in specific has tons of different species within it’s waters, including Musky, Catfish, and Sturgeon.
Ladysmith is also home to some local restaurants that serve up top quality food that you won’t find anywhere else.
